According to NFL.com's history section, the state of Texas has given birth to five professional football teams, four of which still compete in the National Football League.
Dallas Texans
The first Dallas Texans team was established in January, 1953, but only lasted one year. The owners turned the franchise back over to the NFL mid-way through their first season and the league operated the team for the rest of its 1-11 season. The franchise was canceled after the season ended.
The second Dallas Texans team was established in 1960 by Lamar Hunt, who helped found the American Football League (AFL) a year earlier. Hunt hired Hank Stram as the Texans' first coach. The team's first two years produced 8-6 and 6-8 records but they were 11-3 in their third season, won the AFL Western Division and then defeated the Houston Oilers 20-17 in the second overtime period of the AFL Champsionship game.
