Unlike many systems, which assign jury duty dates without input from prospective jurors, the Shelby County justice system gives jurors the ability to select a week of service within a given range of time. When first called to appear, jurors usually spend less than half the day downtown for the purpose of selecting their date of service. Once their date is assigned, jurors receive a white juror card with that date, which can be used later for juror discounts.

Scheduling Jury Duty

In their very first appearance, jurors are asked to consult their calendars, then told which dates they may select, on a first-come first-served basis, to serve jury duty. Available dates span approximately 12 weeks. Jurors are allowed to line up to seek service during specific weeks, but the weeks are called randomly to avoid having jurors jockey for position in line.

Approximately 10 days ahead of their assigned jury duty date, jurors will receive a reminder letter, which lists recommended parking garages, gives details about security (what items are not allowed), and the juror dress code.
